We may not notice it at first, but our driveways paved with asphalt can experience erosion over time. What looks like a couple of minor cracks that are hardly noticeable can turn into large cracks if left in disrepair.

Leaving the asphalt paving in driveways or walks without some form of sealant can result to this kind of erosion which can be more costly to repair in the future.

This is the time when sealcoating comes into the picture.

SEALCOATING ASPHALT DRIVEWAYS

Asphalt is a type of paving whose composition change in different weather changes. When exposed to persistent heat like in the summers; it can render the asphalt soft which could change its form; while in cold weather as in winters; it can be brittle, which could result in the developing of gaps.

With this information, there is one thing that needs to be done and that is to apply sealcoating to the asphalt. Sealcoating is a preventive measure to protect the properties of the asphalt over a longer period.

It could be a tedious undertaking but the advantages far outweigh any work that needs to be done to preserve the excellence of the asphalt.

Sealcoating can bring back the luster of the asphalt; enhance its resistance against toxic materials and weather conditions; giving it a longer life which translates to savings in the future.

With this type of protective measure, we can be sure that the asphalt will be kept in excellent shape for a few good years; after which, we can just use the sealcoating technique again to restore it.

APPLYING SEALCOAT

The best thing about sealcoating is that we don’t have to hire a professional to do this for us. We can easily manage this which could again save us money.

Generally, we have to keep the asphalt free from dirt and other materials; if there are gaps we likewise have to mend the gaps with the right filler; and then we’re ready to begin with our sealcoating.

There are sealcoating mixes we can get in the market which have directions in them so it will be easy for us to come up with the right mix. Once we have applied the first coat; a second one is needed as well.

We have to let the sealcoating dry for about twenty-four hours.
